Vocal Director: Clare Richards

Clare began her musical studies at Penrith Conservatorium at age 5, and has now returned as a teacher herself, acquiring three years of teaching experience building her own studio. As well as one on one tuition in both voice and violin, Clare works as the vocal director with the voices of Inspire Choir and River Valley Singers, and has been assisting in the re-development of choir, and vocal study at Penrith Selective High School.

After completing her exams in 8th-grade voice with distinction through Trinity College London, Clare then continued onto a Bachelor of Music Performance in Voice from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. A recipient of the Elizabeth Todd Leider Prize, and with a great passion for new music, Clare was thrilled to round out her time at university, performing Steve Reich’s, Music for 18 Musicians with Splash Percussion at the Sydney Verge Festival. In addition to her vocal direction across both musical theatre ensembles and choirs, Clare has also performed as both a chorister and soloist with both the Sydney Philharmonia Choir and St James Cathedral Choir, as a young artist for the Canberra International Music Festival performing alongside the Song Company, and with Voci Stupende.

Clare’s technical practice is based mostly on her success with the Bel Canto technique, which she finessed towards the end of her tertiary training alongside tenor Dennis O’Neill, and voice coach Nicole Dorigo. This attention to technique is then applied to various styles of music applicable to students musical interests, to help them achieve the best possible sound.

As well as one on one tutoring, Clare’s experience of choral repertoire provides her with the opportunity to vocally direct the Inspire Choir – a project with community at it’s heart, which has brought a whole new group of singers to the Penrith Conservatorium. Inspire Choir has created a wonderful community of kindness, and musical appreciation within itself.
